One person was killed in a fire in South Plainfield Wednesday, Feb. 4. authorities said. At 4:54 a.m., firefighters responded to Cedarbrook Avenue and found an unresponsive man upstairs, Middlesex County Prosecutor Linda Estremera and South Plainfield Police Chief Peter Papa said. A Carteret man was arrested and charged after he attempted to a deposit a fraudulent check for more than $22,000, authorities announced Tuesday, Dec. 9. Officers responded to the Valley National Bank at 100 Durham Ave. on Monday, Dec. 1, after Antwan Harrell attempted to deposit a phony check for $22,389.11, South Plainfield police said. Bank staff said Harrell had called shortly after and said he would be returning to retrieve a deposit receipt, police said. The crash occurred at about 7:30 a.m. on Friday, May 10 northbound near Exit 4 (Durham Road) in South Plainfield, according to New Jersey State Police. Troopers responded to a motorist aid, said Sgt. Jeffrey Lebron, a State Police spokesman. Upon the trooper’s arrival, a Freightliner box truck ran off the road and into a ditch, he said. There were no injuries reported, Lebron said.
